My Visit To A Betta Farm In SingaporeQuick Links:

Update (Dec 5, 2009) : I am hearing rumors that in this tough economy, Mr. Ho has decided to stop breeding bettas and concentrate on his landscaping business. If anyone has the skinny on this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW so that I can update this page for everyone's knowledge. He is located in Singapore at 78 Seletar Farmway 8. (Off Jalan Kayu). Date : Jan 26, 2009 Hey all! This weather is perfect however for B. Splendens breeding. The humid weather helps the bubble nests to hold together. Being on the equator, the weather is pretty much constant (i.e. hot & humid) all year round. This means that there is very little variation between monthly temperatures, allowing bettas to be bred outdoors, exposed to the native climate all year round. I've been fish farm hopping all week meeting people and i came across "BETTA 26", owned and operated by the award winning Ho Soon Hai. Here's some results from his 2007 betta circuit run. He has winners in almost every category! Mr Ho was nice enuff to let me take pics. Many farms that i've visited were not so accommodating. Anyway... without further ado.... here are some pics...... 1. The place was pretty obscure, no flashy lights or conspicuous signage. Only a little sign of his award winning plakat is all the "advertising" he needs.
2) So we go to the "farm" ... nothing more than a wooden shack overgrown (on the inside) with ficus plants
3) He has a pinup poster by the door with all his award winning plakats.
4) Step past the door ... a betta fanatic's heaven...
5) So many bettas! I'm excited like a boy!
6) Oh God... i think i wet my knickers...
7) So I noticed that all the water in the jars were brown....
8) So he takes me out back and shows me his buckets of brewing Indian Almond "Ketapang" Leaves.
9) Size comparison of his "small" jars.
10) Buncha empty jars out back.
11) Championship betta food ....
12) Live Tubifex no doubt...
13) Guess where the culls end up...
14) Mr Ho lets me take a pic of one of his fine red plakats. The pic doesn't do it justice. These are some of the deepest reddest 8-ray plakats I have ever seen.
15) I grab a pic with the man himself. He asks me how i got to be so "big". I tell him it's the Texas beef. PLUG On the urging of my friends, I started this website by putting together the original (and quite successful) B. Macrostoma pages. Since then it has grown by quite a bit. All this time I've provided all this info and lots of free e-mail support to anyone who needed help. The advertising on this page helps out a little to offset the cost of webhosting. So if you see something that you may be interested in listed within the Google Ads banners, then please don't hesitate to check it out. I thank you all for your great interest in my articles and I hope to keep hearing from you guys, even if it is just dropping me a note to say hi. God Bless! |
